bug3

I like how i managed to capture the bug in the last angle. It’s quite hilarious. as if the bug’s looking down at me. I’m also quite proud of the fact that i managed to overcome all heebiejeebies to capture these pics…after all the bug does fly. And i’m not using zoom. Does it tell you how close I got to the bug? :D I was lying flat on the floor cm-s away from it :P My sister screeched at me. Not my fault. I like pretty bugs.

I dislike the many blurry pictures i got. These are the three i luckily captured clear and in ok angles. It’s very spontaneous and hard to control composition (esp since the bug moves ><)

I can improve on quick reaction and quick thinking to increase chances of taking good pictures, esp since so many good pictures last only for a second before it’s gone!

Paper cut cow

Paper cut cow

Oh the fun

Liquid paper art: Since Minne and I are sharing, there’s Minne, much taller than me XD With her fringe and straight hair XD As well as cow creation collaborated with Yuan Zhao

What I like : The creativity. The cow is hilarious. And recycled.

What I dislike: The cow is so post modern D: And ugly-ly cute. Remember beauty in the eye of beholder. and creator.

Improvement: Colour combi XD And length of legs makes cow even more retarded. I like my liquid paper drawing though XD

Chocolate!

What I like: Clarity and creaminess!

What I dislike: Flash D: So gross.

What I can improve on…: Get better lighting.

Hmm, I’ve played with lighting a little (see plant with flash). I realise that in some cases, using flash isn’t that bad. Sure, depth os compromised, but the plant looks less dull with flash. Use of lighting inspired by artist Tom Mackie, but he’s is tons nicer cos he’s lighting comes from behind the plant, making it glow without compromising the depth :D

Secondly, Can Jess or someone photoshop the photo with caption “green” ? It’s so…empty there. I quite like the emptiness, but I wonder how it feels to have some yong / jess style little beings occupying that space :3

Hmm, I’m really enjoying myself looking for patterns in nature. I find skies, plants and water particularly nice (they have so many forms!) Nature is a wonderful source of inspiration :D

Down the HDB flat

Down the HDB flat

I so proud of these few pictures XD Noob is noob, but noob has its own happiness. :D (grammar corrected by thiathia)

The first one: I like the glowy lights! and how the lights sorta intersect. I’ve no real idea why it pleases me though. Just happened to notice that the picture is potentially good when i tried to “paparazzi” my own sister. “hmm, bg looks nice”. SNAP! *adjusts angle a little* SNAP!  The thing I don’t like about it is …  I didn’t plan much D: It’s such a … unplanned, just happen to find picture. If only I had more skills, maybe I can arrange it to be nicer D:

Second one: Very purposefully arranged. I find it quite…ok? The big tree on the right is quite random o.0

Third one: :D Oh my, I’ve lived in the HDB for 10 + years, and only found this scene recently? I’m quite proud of this one, esp since I’ve been taking a few pictures from this window, and to be able to find this composition…i *think* I have *improved*. Eeps.I like how the vertical lines are separated into horizontal bands of the clothes drying thing and the cars and the HDB flat too :D

What I Like: How the composition involves line. More interesting.

What I dislike: Heh, I KNOW there’s room for improvement! I’m just too dumb to find it!

Signs off, chia.

Can’t remember when I drew this. A3, poster paint. Yeah, me is noob and so is the art materials at home. Title? : Patriotic table cloth.

My art teacher says : when you draw apples, you can always add green! (Now doesn’t that remind you of Cezanne’s rotting fruits?)

I like: The colours on the metal can. Reflection in the milk thingum.

I dislike: The folds on the red cloth D: The dark blue parts are horrible. My signature using paintbrush is just as bad.

chia2

Title: Green and white table cloth (I’m so original). Other info: Same as above. That’s why these two appear in the same post.

Oh the reflection…mom framed it happily with some others (malaysia = cheaper than singapore!)

What I like: Hmm, it looks quite like the original that we were asked to mimic (assignment given by other art teacher)

what i dislike: w/o the art teacher it wouldn’t look like this D: I can’t paint folds in cloth properly ><

Skeleton scratches head - IH is puzzling

Skeleton scratches head - IH is puzzling

Monster eats bamboo.

Monster eats bamboo.

Hmm, May ignore the first one with the skull. It’s called venting frustration in form of random doodle.

It’s the second one I’ve something to talk about:

Bamboo! Why do leaves NEED to cross? (I think Carol or someone raised this issue about bamboos) Somehow adults (in my case my uncle) insist that the leaves need to cross

This is my first time trying to draw bamboo in … pen.

Quite weird, cos if you draw with a mao bi, the bamboo pole would be done in a stroke, instead of two lines with a pen o.0

If you open the picture in a new tab you’ll probably see the bamboo done in two styles : The one on the left being a pen replica of the original mao bi kind, the right being the version that Jenny drew for her coursework. Hmm, makes me realise that one ended up fatter than the other. And thus monster is created to chew on fatter one, as if thinner one was already….gobbled up.

What I enjoy : It’s so evil and hilarious. I enjoyed drawing out both styles of bamboo :D It’s interesting to see how the chinese ink style varies with the one drawn “realistically”. (In this case, still from my imagination, or recollection of how Jenny’s looked like) The “realistic” one is much harder though, since the chinese ink style is somewhat simplified :D

What I dislike : Why do I end up putting in effort into doodle-ish stuff? I should have drawn this on a proper piece of paper (aka the sketch book we made.) I can redraw this…but inevitably the 2nd one loses the “feel” of the first D: I should bring a tiny sketchbook with me all the time D: Then when “inspiration” strikes, I can immediately draw on a better piece of paper…instead of one that has lines all over the place D:

What I can improve on: Draw on proper paper. Try diff mediums (i wonder how pastel bamboo looks like…pasty?)

My Ramblings and Thoughts after settling on topic FAMILY.

Now why family? See next:

Biennale artist as source of inspiration

Biennale artist as source of inspiration

Oh, sorry, not at actual reason yet. However, Rachel Goh, who created this series of photographs of her family in the likeness of a childhood family photo really inspired and encouraged me to pursue this topic further. She’s also the one who showed me that “perfect” poses can have twists! (It’s hilarious to see the father’s expression in the video as he puts on female clothing. Or the brother’s.)

Little women, where i got my topic (family) from

Little women, where i got my topic (family) from

Ah, the topic giver. While watching it (not this rendition though…), I suddenly thought that I could pick out themes in the movie…and family was the first topic to strike me. After all the March family are indeed very close! (Go READ the book or WATCH the movie! I was upset when Beth died D: ) Oh, the movie I watched was very Jo centered (shoot, i wrote JoE in my prep board D:)

Research Study not used

Research Study not used

While exploring the topic family, I went on to look at Shells (A home. Sheltered / protected / close. Family. However, if you enlarge the picture you might be able to see the reason why I did not use it in my final.)  The Art room has an AWESOME collection of shells! Mine is so puny       D:        TT_TT         *bawls*         *wails*

Research study family n fren

Research study family n fren

Of course, what will family be if my family wasn’t in! There’s my dad, and there’s my sis…but why’s thiaboon and chihboon there? (There is a reason why most research studies are about food…but that’s for later) You see, I initially also decided that since I’m sec 4…it’ll be worthwhile to do something related to NYGH…after all, “school is our 2nd home” XD I spend much more waking hours at school than at home (due to CCAs and AEP :P ) and I couldn’t help but immediately find that NYGH is another “family” to me. (Look at the Apes! We’re a boonmily!) Took a long time to choose who to put in my painting…Here are some of the basic requirements:

1) In AEP, ‘cos these are the people I’ve known for 4 years.

2) Have pics of them eating (or if I manage to kope it / If they let me take pics of them eating)

By then, only a few were left. #2 took out most people. :D And thus, Me + 4 family members + 4 friends! (9 ppl, not 十全十美!)

research study Family fren n stuff

research study Family fren n stuff

The rest of the studies of my Friends, Family, as well as what I group under “others” (not food nor people) Yeah, I did everyone that I drew great injustice. SORRY! But…you get to enjoy nice food in the painting! (Erm, except for Bro. He’s playing the violin XD)

research study setting and food

research study setting and food

The study of Botanical Gardens…there’s a reason why it’s chosen…The last board gives the reason…

I took the pictures. Not from online sources :D Does any fellow OM Shanghai ppl remember the lovely plate of onion rings? <3

I tried to do water colour style for the tree at first…then gave up. I ended up treating water colour like poster paint o.0 Again.

research study food

research study food

Whee! Food and food alone! To be honest I’m quite proud of the way some turned out to be…and upset how I ruined some too D: The pie pastry was nicer in ink only…then I applied water colour like poster paint and ruined the pastry D: However the sushi was a save! It started average after painting…then oolah! It was heavily coloured with colour pencils and gel markers to become edible!

Uh, why food? After deciding on FAMILY, I had to decide what they are doing…after listing some of the most common, yet significant and closest-to-the-heart activities, I felt that a meal (I was thinking along the lines of dinner) was something that can show how close a family is. (Imagine sitting at a table with strangers D: Even uber nice dish don’t taste as good!) Especially most families (fine, mine is like that) do not find many opportunities to eat together, despite food being a basic necessity. Therefore, VOILA! Food! Yum Yum.

composition 1 n 2

composition 1 n 2

The original inspiration for composition one was by some painter…oops! Anyway, it was a very nice painting with various activity (and after looking at it I realized that I could put in my bro as a violinist XD That’s why he didn’t eat :3) This was a painting Mrs Tan found for me and we felt that it could be a good inspiration, for composition or style. However…there’s a lot a lot of people here! More than 9! It’s hard to arrange 9 ppl into the space D:

Composition 2 was very difficult to use. After awhile, I realised it probably won’t be chosen (too little ppl this time), and it doesn’t show a family as I want it…it’s too “perfect”, too “posed”, not natural and spontaneous like close family and friends would be when EATING. Nevertheless, I like the bg I gave it…It’s in NYGH! <3 Yes, i took the picture of the background for final of composition 2 myself XD

final composition

final composition

Final composition came from a photo in a vineyard…not appropriate for a family / friend dinner to be at, so I changed the setting.

Unfortunately, New Zealand sunset is pretty and pretty farfetched too. Got rejected. Too dramatic le.

Thus…BOTANICAL GARDEN! My family goes there on a weekly basis to exercise, so it’s a pretty good venue to eat at (I mean, it’s a very likely place to find us eating at!) It’s also a very nice (and green) place! Had to remove the road though, it was somewhat distracting. This is a local place, where we’d feel at ease eating! ^^ The dishes are also the finger food kind (imagine eating cooked fish or meat in the middle of Botanical garden as if you’re at home).

Overall, this is still an unlikely scene…my friends and my family eating together? Not going to happen anytime soon. So far, only cynt managed to eat at my home (Thanks for coming all the way from PASIR RIS!). On a birthday (spy birthday cake), it’s even less likely, cos my family prefers small birthday gatherings (have been so for ages). It’s almost…ack, a rather personal wish that my family and my friends will one day get to know each other until as close as portrayed in the final…PAINTING D:

gasp. the painting! eez horrigible. vegetable. carp. *flaps*

Inference from nonsense above:  The artist herself is largely displeased with her final painting. Ah well. It’s over.

Signs off,

Nooboet.

Else this would be nooboet’s film for the black and white photography mentioned many posts ago. Unfortunately, the frame became opaque, a series of accidents happened, and nooboet had to redo a few times. Anyway, she stuck the damaged film on my sketchbook, at the suggestion of teacher L. Oh, teacher L neglected to mention beforehand that the camera gives the view that is significantly higher than the one actually taken. Therefore many of the pictures turned out very different from what was planned…
