Coursework is OVER

A little late to announce that, considering I’ve posted quite a few posts after horrible friday.
Anyway, here’s my boards:
My Ramblings and Thoughts after settling on topic FAMILY.
Now why family? See next:
Oh, sorry, not at actual reason yet. However, Rachel Goh, who created this series of photographs of her family in the likeness of a childhood family photo really inspired and encouraged me to pursue this topic further. She’s also the one who showed me that “perfect” poses can have twists! (It’s hilarious to see the father’s expression in the video as he puts on female clothing. Or the brother’s.)
Ah, the topic giver. While watching it (not this rendition though…), I suddenly thought that I could pick out themes in the movie…and family was the first topic to strike me. After all the March family are indeed very close! (Go READ the book or WATCH the movie! I was upset when Beth died D: ) Oh, the movie I watched was very Jo centered (shoot, i wrote JoE in my prep board D:)
While exploring the topic family, I went on to look at Shells (A home. Sheltered / protected / close. Family. However, if you enlarge the picture you might be able to see the reason why I did not use it in my final.) The Art room has an AWESOME collection of shells! Mine is so puny D: TT_TT *bawls* *wails*
Of course, what will family be if my family wasn’t in! There’s my dad, and there’s my sis…but why’s thiaboon and chihboon there? (There is a reason why most research studies are about food…but that’s for later) You see, I initially also decided that since I’m sec 4…it’ll be worthwhile to do something related to NYGH…after all, “school is our 2nd home” XD I spend much more waking hours at school than at home (due to CCAs and AEP
) and I couldn’t help but immediately find that NYGH is another “family” to me. (Look at the Apes! We’re a boonmily!) Took a long time to choose who to put in my painting…Here are some of the basic requirements:
1) In AEP, ‘cos these are the people I’ve known for 4 years.
2) Have pics of them eating (or if I manage to kope it / If they let me take pics of them eating)
By then, only a few were left. #2 took out most people.
And thus, Me + 4 family members + 4 friends! (9 ppl, not 十全十美!)
The rest of the studies of my Friends, Family, as well as what I group under “others” (not food nor people) Yeah, I did everyone that I drew great injustice. SORRY! But…you get to enjoy nice food in the painting! (Erm, except for Bro. He’s playing the violin XD)
The study of Botanical Gardens…there’s a reason why it’s chosen…The last board gives the reason…
I took the pictures. Not from online sources
Does any fellow OM Shanghai ppl remember the lovely plate of onion rings? <3
I tried to do water colour style for the tree at first…then gave up. I ended up treating water colour like poster paint o.0 Again.
Whee! Food and food alone! To be honest I’m quite proud of the way some turned out to be…and upset how I ruined some too D: The pie pastry was nicer in ink only…then I applied water colour like poster paint and ruined the pastry D: However the sushi was a save! It started average after painting…then oolah! It was heavily coloured with colour pencils and gel markers to become edible!
Uh, why food? After deciding on FAMILY, I had to decide what they are doing…after listing some of the most common, yet significant and closest-to-the-heart activities, I felt that a meal (I was thinking along the lines of dinner) was something that can show how close a family is. (Imagine sitting at a table with strangers D: Even uber nice dish don’t taste as good!) Especially most families (fine, mine is like that) do not find many opportunities to eat together, despite food being a basic necessity. Therefore, VOILA! Food! Yum Yum.
The original inspiration for composition one was by some painter…oops! Anyway, it was a very nice painting with various activity (and after looking at it I realized that I could put in my bro as a violinist XD That’s why he didn’t eat :3) This was a painting Mrs Tan found for me and we felt that it could be a good inspiration, for composition or style. However…there’s a lot a lot of people here! More than 9! It’s hard to arrange 9 ppl into the space D:
Composition 2 was very difficult to use. After awhile, I realised it probably won’t be chosen (too little ppl this time), and it doesn’t show a family as I want it…it’s too “perfect”, too “posed”, not natural and spontaneous like close family and friends would be when EATING. Nevertheless, I like the bg I gave it…It’s in NYGH! <3 Yes, i took the picture of the background for final of composition 2 myself XD
Final composition came from a photo in a vineyard…not appropriate for a family / friend dinner to be at, so I changed the setting.
Unfortunately, New Zealand sunset is pretty and pretty farfetched too. Got rejected. Too dramatic le.
Thus…BOTANICAL GARDEN! My family goes there on a weekly basis to exercise, so it’s a pretty good venue to eat at (I mean, it’s a very likely place to find us eating at!) It’s also a very nice (and green) place! Had to remove the road though, it was somewhat distracting. This is a local place, where we’d feel at ease eating! ^^ The dishes are also the finger food kind (imagine eating cooked fish or meat in the middle of Botanical garden as if you’re at home).
Overall, this is still an unlikely scene…my friends and my family eating together? Not going to happen anytime soon. So far, only cynt managed to eat at my home (Thanks for coming all the way from PASIR RIS!). On a birthday (spy birthday cake), it’s even less likely, cos my family prefers small birthday gatherings (have been so for ages). It’s almost…ack, a rather personal wish that my family and my friends will one day get to know each other until as close as portrayed in the final…PAINTING D:
gasp. the painting! eez horrigible. vegetable. carp. *flaps*
Inference from nonsense above: The artist herself is largely displeased with her final painting. Ah well. It’s over.
Signs off,
Nooboet.
Nooboet’s sketchbook made in 2008.o.0
June 8, 2009 in Artworks, Coursework related., Logo designs | 1 comment
Nooboet’s strange teacher (mentioned in a few posts ago) decided to expose sec 3 ‘08 AEP class to book binding. Included in the book are 20 hand drawings (that have not been scanned).
Here are sketches done…welcome Nike.
The drawings in red ink were done by fellow ape Boonssica. The words are by nooboet though
Drawn during an aep trip (where the teachers had the interesting experience of dressing up like ancient Greek Gods. The lighting was quite bad, could barely see what nooboet herself was drawing TT.TT
The leafy thing was inspired from a CD from childhood. Nooboet recalls the CD saying things such as ” Dangerous Creatures”, where upon double-clicking the program’s icon, the CD shows a leafy barrier, pushes it apart with the anonymous hands to show the activities. Quite fun. As can be observed, things are more related to … DOORS.
Since OBS entailed trekking and kayaking (or triyaking). Nooboet thought that she might as well create something to do with those main activities.
oh, boonssica’s pikachu and mudkip…nooboet had no part in that! Designs on this page are entirely random.
Yep, here features Nooboet’s final designs…the map and the compass.
On A4 paper, not sketchbook. There’s that dangerous creature thing again, as well as some other designs and mind mapping.
the map here is closer to the final! The door design is here again, but needs more tendrils to balance out…
there. the final – printed, submitted, and returned. (photoshopped) Teacher’s comments (however illegible) are included. let’s proceed.
Nooboet’s stitch is attached to her pencil case! <3 Her friend’s stitch was TINY!
Else this would be nooboet’s film for the black and white photography mentioned many posts ago. Unfortunately, the frame became opaque, a series of accidents happened, and nooboet had to redo a few times. Anyway, she stuck the damaged film on my sketchbook, at the suggestion of teacher L. Oh, teacher L neglected to mention beforehand that the camera gives the view that is significantly higher than the one actually taken. Therefore many of the pictures turned out very different from what was planned…
Yongboon was invited by a friend (from maple story, no less!) to attend his exhibition! The same exhibition (sorry, not museum) also featured the works of Japanese artist…ugh, nooboet was syre that she had her name card somewhere. More updates regarding this trip will be given when more information is found! This trip was informative since the artists were there! (cos it’s exhibition opening day!)
Back to designs…sec 4
Had more difficulties designing this than the previous year’s. At least nooboet could keep designing doors and paths…she had no idea what to do for this year. She kept picturing the NYCD’s jacket…
so she churned out many graceful animals that she koped from online. there. Now on with…coursework. 1 only. don’t get too excited.
Xinboon is to be credited with the reason why daddad looks like daddad. Really. Her replicating skills are phenomenal!
nooboet has to go on with coursework now! Bye!
Ahah, coursework

It’s the holidays. Amusingly, since last saturday & sunday (where I was at malaysia), I haven’t slept past 8. Bleh
Past tues to fri (decided to spend the monday home since just came back from Malaysia) saw me in the Mac Lab, coming up with…tadaa, two compositions + one still working on it.
No sneak peek on them yet, since they’re in one huge photoshop file, under diff groups (duh). The first composition is based on this lovely painting.
Eheh. Nice painting. But sooo many people TT.TT
My canvas size is 1.2m by 1.2m. Yep, it’s a SQUARE. But Kang’s is…1.6m by 1.8. Our teacher could walk through it w/o a prob o.0 Oh, I hammered my thumb :3
The second composition is…horrible. Ah well. not showing
The following pix are related to coursework! Either as references, inspirations for composition / style / what not, or some stuff that I drew over the past few…months. oops.
eek. i know, uber bad proportion. ah well. ;P
…there’s a reason for the egg! Traditional Chinese family, you see XD The novelty of pink eggs <3
unless I get a better pic. But I’ll need his camera D: Dunno if he’ll lend me…but he’s turning nicer as he becomes more mature (older)…like buying drinks, etc. It’s scary.
yayy! yum! This was from last year’s shanghai trip (OM Shanghai). <3 Yum!
shan’t post anymore. Bleh >< There’s a lot of stuff TT.TT
nooboet…
Uh…I’m Back?

Yo, Just to post the stuff I sketched for coursework over the weeks.
Bleh. Don’t expect much.
I’m including two of my sec 1/2 stuff here…
Dec 2006. The holiday during which I’m going from sec 1 to 2. I learned that pencil does not show much after you use watercolour…i was a little upset o.0
Umm…the radiating effect wasn’t intentional. Somehow the scanner picked that up…
After flipping through my past sketches for coursework workable stuff, I found these two and wondered if I should go with Chinese, or Western food? Chinese—my mother tongue. Something I use everyday at home. Western—something I eat when I can…:D
Or canteen style? Rojak? Ack.

pencil and Colour pencil...smaller than 1/4 A4. About 1 hr each coloured one w/o distractions. 2009.
Stumbled onto them online. Shells linking to home. Linking to family and closeness, which I’ll be featuring in my coursework. I like shells anyway, so I’ll probably feature them in the coursework…eat seafood? Huh. Oh, the shell in the middle is from this person called Gina Mikel. Practically copied the entire shell, but my not-so-good skills with colour pencil and my love for weird colours made this shell a little diff from the original. The others…no idea.
Do ignore the cat and skull doodle at the top if you can see it. You CAN’T see it.
A shell from the art room. Was picking through my own collection of small to tiny sizes of shells when lovely art teacher came by and saved me by acquainting me with the school’s collection of shells. This is one of the shells that I thought was usable…daunting to draw at first though. Xinboon and I found the shell real cool…if you hold it in a certain way it looks like a CLAW.
Cynt! I should be featuring her in the final. I need a pic of her eating…or near food. At least interacting with the food or people around her…
More shell studies. Spent more effort on this one…P
This one…Doesn’t show the shiny-ness and creamy feel(?!) of the shell. It’s a very pretty shell ><
Ahah XD It’s a yellow banana on a purple bg. Instead of shading in a darker bg, i had fun drawing lines from the banana.
Tingchih! First person I’m drawing that is eating…not that I’ve drawn many.
Needa dig up photos of people eating…where did I leave the photos of Amanda eating? XD
Reflections…><:
Firstly, the people’s proportion are still off. >< Must practice more ahhhh…shall turn to bro for help…but the last time I did, he said sketch more.
Secondly…complicated things aren’t that bad if you take it bite sized! Was rather reluctant to draw the shells at first…those with patterns…cos there was a lot of patterns to draw. But after tackling them one by one…they’re done! There’s a sense of accomplishment XD
Lastly…I should just sketch somewhere else, not in front of a computer…i tend to get distracted easily o.- Next time, I shall ask xinboon to monitor my actions…instead of influencing her to play games o.o My fault. But Geo challenge’s quite fun… ;P
Nooboet has to go off now. Bye!
Coursework…yet again. I’m on posting spree, to make up for the lost weeks.

Hi
Nooboet decides to write in third person. How long will the random urge to write in 3rd person last…not sure. Maybe she’ll lose it after finishing this post?
These two skimpy sketches…were done by nooboet. The cynthia sketch was based on a picture taken on a museum trip. Nooboet shall move on to drawing out the ideas of her coursework soon! <3
Reflections on these works:
Cynthia’s sketch was done in front of a mac in the mac lab. Nooboet kept getting her proportions wrong (she asks for forgiveness from thiaboon) and when she finally was somewhat satisfied with the placing of the features, there are many things still not cynt like enough. Thus help was obtained XD Thanks to Yongboon for sculpting the face! Shall be shading it one day…if the absentminded writer of the post can find the picture again.
Here’s the original. Hope cynt doesn’t mind.
It’s supposed to be the same person…
Onto the second one…it is a sketch of a work done by Bobby Neel Adams. He combined to faces…explains the section that is quite different from the others. Nooboet, having found it quite interesting, may be adapting it. She’s still thinking, you see…
The ape’s lovely teacher informs nooboet that the later drawing are more proportionate than the Bobby Neel Adams. The writer herself agrees and admits that she used close to zero guidelines to draw the girl.
Nooboet did her curls pretty badly…not to mention the proportion’s all wrong. Oh well. Anyone noticed what she has shaded/written/drawn on the girl’s shirt? It was the word “girl” in cursive written over and over again. Our teacher mentioned this method to create interesting texture when Nooboet was a little sec one or two student, so she decided to try it out!
The eye of the older picture of the girl is smaller then what it is supposed to be…gasp. Made her look less strong then she actually does in the photo. Nooboet apologizes for the mistake.
Nooboet must get on with her other work now! Oh, more info on Bobby Neel Adams can be found on http://www.bobbyneeladams.com/index.html .
nooboet.
Update <3
Uh. Just to upload two more random things.
Yah. I like doodling. I am quite afraid of drawing people. What possessed me to decide to paint people for coursework? I may want to try and find ways to decrease the number of faces…
nooboet.
Coursework

Hey all.
It’s the third month already!!! And what have I done so far? Practically nothing. High time for a Reality check!
I’m relying on peers for pictures. My camera conked out before I could take pictures of them eating. I’ve used Jenny’s camera…I’ll need more though. Ack.
Some possible scenarios/settings the Coursework painting may be in:
1) Dinner. Highly possible. Esp since families don’t even eat dinner together sometimes…mine included. We can’t wait til 10 or 11pm for dinner…that’s about when dad comes home to eat o.O
2) Shopping?! I don’t really like to do so… Bro and I tend to voice our complaints after half an hour of shopping.
3) Birthdays! This can be combined with dinner, since my family celebrates our birthdays at night, when My pa gets home. It’ll be interesting to combine pics of friends into me birthday scene, since…that hasn’t happened since I’m in lower primary. Birthdays after that have been celebrated with family members or another family or two, where the adults are good friends with each other. Thus if my friends appear in this kind of small birthdays, it will imply that our families are very close…
4) Family outings. This is a maybe. I’m more settled on the dinner thing though. It’s more family-ish, rather than all fun and games. Anyone can play together, but eating and chatting happily over dinner? Not neccessarily. But it’s still worth exploring.
Possible Compositions:
1) Using words to break up the picture into sections.
2) Typical stiff “perfect” potraits…not likely. My subject matter is probably in some weird pose (eating and talking) rather than standing straight…
3) Use another painting’s composition and make a parody out of it by sticking my friends and family onto it.
Symbols? :
1) Snail Shell. Protected, and a home as well.
2) Gears/rope/chains to show bond?
Other ideas:
1) Friends and family eating together.
2) Family eats canteen food. Friend eats “home” food.
3) Change clothes.
4) Change poses
5) Morphing one into another caterpillar style.
6) Use photoshop to blend the people together…
7) Bobby Neel Adams way. Google him up if you don’t know him. What he did is quite interesting
What I have:
1) Amanda eating food (sec 1 picture). I think I have two of that…
2) Tingchih eating food. Also sec 1 picture. I possibly also have two of that.
Other ideas (II):
1) Me as a waitress?!
Action to be taken: Draw me ideas out!!!!!
I’ve found online a stash of pictures of paintings where there are food or outings. Not to mention I found the artist who did a work in the Singapore Biennale where the was a clothes switch among her own family members. Bobby Neel Adams’ method of combining faces is interesting too!
Realize that I’ve not been posting much…shall have to change that! <3
Cya!
Nooboet. She’s too lazy to make up strange messages to signify the end to her post.

Yep, I already had my tang yuan. Mom made it, very nice
Here to update on my plans for coursework:
1) Family memories. Possibly using my own family, but since I am graduating from Nanyang (oh my), the family in this case will be the Nanyang family, or my friends for the matter.
2) The picture will not feature perfect poses. Someone forbid that. So…rigid. If they have to be perfect, i’ll make sure there’s something strange about them.
3) Therefore it will most likely be candid! !!! And since it has to do with Nanyang family. . . I’ll come after my peers once i get my charger back from malaysia (left it there by accident. oops!)
4) Likely, the body of the figures will be my family. Unfortunately, their heads will be replaced, ahah XD
5) Perhaps I’ll do a few of this family thing, but each must have its own uh…theme. Not sure what though. I’m still thinking. Then I’ll rearrange them so tt they have some logical order.
6) I need to find the @inspiration@ soon. Meeps.
Yeah, tt’s all.
Nooboet has to do homework now, so goodbye
